location, Location, LOCATION

If you were to open a physical retail store, what is the first thing you learn? location, Location, LOCATION! Well… why should that be any different when you go to look for something on the web? The answer is that it shouldn’t. Location is so important on the web because if people can’t find you, then what’s the point of having a website?

One statistic that I saw estimates that about 400 to 500 million people search the internet every day and those people total about 88 billion searchers per month!! That’s a lot of searching! Well, if that many people are searching, don’t you want to be found? Which then leads us to the question, “How do people search on the net”? Because if you don’t know how they search, how do you know how to be found.

Video on SEO

In the video below, I give a live example of how people search on search engines.

Most studies also show that a majority of people that don’t find what they are looking for on page one, strangely enough do NOT go to page two… They perform a completely new search!

This is why it is important to get someone that knows SEO, can find out what people actually search for, and how to make your site visible to those people, because like Kenny Harper showed us on the last Key Theory video, it’s all simple math…

SEO can get you more Traffic, which means more sales, which means more dollars in your pocket!

In one of my last posts I wrote reasons why people should have a LinkedIn account. Whether you are looking for a job or own your own business it’s not what you know but who you know and linked in is a great tool for making and keeping track of contacts.

Five tips for succeeding on LinkedIn

Get your profile to 100 percent complete.
It’s not hard to do and it doesn’t even have to be done at once. Try doing one step at a time and it will be done in no time.

Connect with others
Connect with your friends, coworkers and contacts. When you meet someone or get a business card look them up and connect with them.

Join groups and participate
There are a lot of groups on LinkedIn under just about any category you can think of. Take a day of the week and check out some topics, comment on them and connect with others.

Update your status
Whether you do it on LinkedIn, Twitter or another outlet, make sure to keep your account fresh and let people know any recent accomplishments, any insight you can provide or a bit more about your personality.

Be real and interact
This is not a numbers game. You don’t need to race to get a lot of contacts. Grow your contacts in time and juries the relationships you have and always remember to be yourself.

Be sure to check out the various apps on linked in that you can add to your account there are a plethora of apps that can add value to your page

LinkedIn as given me many opportunities and I’m sure it can work for you. Setting aside even five minutes in a day can make a difference. Now go get to it!

LinkedIn is a great tool for making contacts, learning from peers and building your personal brand.

I get to meet a lot of people while out networking from fellow marketers to business owners and I am continuously surprised with how many professionals who will spend hours of their time at networking events aren’t leveraging LinkedIn for online networking.

Now as a busy guy myself I totally get there isn’t enough time in a day to get involved in every social media channel out there and make a thousand updates a day but even spending five minutes in a day can help you expand your reach and build your personal brand.

Three reasons to utilize LinkedIn

Seventy percent of the top fortune 100 companies utilize lined in for recruiting talent.
so if your looking for a job or may in the future don’t you think it might be worth your while to start building your account?

You can easily organize and categorize your contacts
Sure you may be able to organize your contacts elsewhere but LinkedIn can help keep everyone’s information up to date.

You can be introduced to great contacts through your connections
Just like in the real world your contacts ca hook you up with great people but on LinkedIn their contacts are all listed out for you. You can see who your contacts know and easily extend your network and connect with people you’d like to meet.

LinkedIn can build your personal brand.
By making one update a day or every other day via LinkedIn or a connected LinkedIn channel you will start increasing your presence and gaining attention of others. I know this works. People know what I’m up to with out me having to tell them.

LinkedIn has introduced me to great new contacts and brought me new business.

There are many other reasons to participate on LinkedIn so get on it. It’s fun and easy so there’s no need to think of excuses why you can’t do it. ; )

Next post I’ll share some tips for those who are already on LinkedIn for making it more successful.

Xtreme Business Success took place in Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday, June 08, 2011 and featured topics from marketing and accounting to brain training and motivation.

On Wednesday, June 08, 2011, I went to an event called Xtreme Business Success which took place in Jacksonville, Florida. I wasn’t sure what to expect when seeing the initial event posting, but after being invited to the event by Social Network Event Planner Ellen Manus (mixitupnetworking.com), I thought I’d give it a go and it was an Extreme Business Success after all.

The event was inspiring, motivating and educational. I highly recommend going to future events. – Kenny Harper

XBS really featured something for everyone from marketing and accounting to brain training and motivation this was a well rounded event.

Google: Friend or Foe? by Chuck Hall, Web Marketing of North Florida

Chuck put on a killer presentation talking about how you can utilize Google to gain more web traffic by implementing search engine optimization or pay-per-click advertising (AdWords). Now I offer similar services to my clients but I definitely enjoyed hearing another perspective on the issue. Chuck understands the importance of SEO and sounds like he is a master of his craft. We may try collaborating in the future. If you have a website and haven’t invested in SEO or aren’t utilizing AdWords, you could be missing out on more leads. webmarketingofnorthflorida.com

Personal Power Networks by Cindy Coates, Coates Connects

Cindy is a self proclaimed “Queen of Connections”. She helps people with busy schedules network, promote their brand, product or service. She does this by going to networking events, utilizing social media and other networking techniques. Cindy also does photography for commercial and private customers. Cindy’s positive attitude is great and I’m glad to have met her. facebook.com/CoatesConnects2u

4-Step GUTS FORMULA for Success! By Deb Cottle, World on a String.

Deb Cottle is a motivational speaker who has come up with a great strategy for business success… G.U.T.S. This acronym spells out a strategy for becoming successful and is easy to remember and implement into your life style. I was so impressed by Deb’s presentation I bought the book “World on a String”. Check out her site and be sure to check out her presentation in person. worldonastring.com

Names and Faces: Memory Training by Matthew Barrett, Brain-Trainers.

So if you’ve met me you may notice that I’m not very good with names and sometimes even faces. (blasted monkeys) However as Matt preaches we all have the ability to be good with names but we must learn the techniques to sharpen this skill set. Matt putt on a stellar presentation full of energy and insight. I feel like I definitely have a better shot at remembering names now after hearing Matt’s technique. If I continue to practice the techniques I’m sure I’ll get it in time. brain-trainers.net

Top Ten Tax Tips by Jim Mainwaring, CPA

Jim reviewed some great tax tips for companies to both save money and to keep from getting in trouble with the IRS. For a long time I never realized how important it was to have a CPA with a passion for knowledge, I thought they just crunched the numbers. I’ve come to realize that choosing the right CPA can make a large difference in your business and profit margins. Jim’s a great guy with a great understanding of the tips and tactics of accounting. proadvisor.intuit.com/quickbooks-help/jim-mainwaring

Put $$$ Back in the Business Owners Pocket by Ashley Berg, Bottom Line Plus, LLC

Last but not least, Ashley Berg discussed five strategies how businesses could save money. Her company offers these services to companies who are looking to save money and gets paid on performance. How cool is that? No reason to pay someone hoping for results, you pay based on performance. She definitely has done her homework and provides a great service for businesses. facebook.com/bergalerg

As mentioned above, this event was great and I look forward to future events like this and others. I have been planning for awhile to put something similar together but it just hasn’t come to fruition. Now I’m motivated to make it happen so stay tuned. : )

I network with a lot of business owners and from time to time people tell me some of the issues they have with their e-mail client, event calendars or keeping their employees on the same page.

Google Apps can provide some really convenient solutions for your business. You can try out the services for free from http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/index.html.

Great things you can use from Google Apps

Use G-mail for your e-mail solution with your company address (you@yoursite.com)

Create Text Documents, Spreadsheets and Presentations in the Cloud that you can access from anywhere

Utilize Google Sites to log and organize important company information

Create a private Google Video channel to share company videos

Everything is in the cloud, so you can access it from anywhere, your home, office on travel, mobile device. It is really easy to use.

You can give access to people and several people can be making edits to one document… at the same time. You may think this may be a pain but it’s not, they can see you making edits. This actually is great for collaboration.

Google Apps extend capabilities.

Google has recently added new apps to further excel their capabilities.

Accounting & Finance

Calendar & Scheduling

Customer Management

Document Management

Education

Productivity

Project Management

Sales & Marketing

Workflow

Key Theory uses Google apps for our business needs and helps clients get started with these great tools.

I met Rylan at an SEO MeetUp in the Fall of 2010. He has been running his own web design and marketing business. Through the past several months we’ve managed to keep in touch, collaborate on a few projects and continue to grow our working relationship.

My efforts with Key Theory have picked up quite a bit in the last several months and it has become apparent for me to continue to provide the quality of work I strive to provide, Key Theory needed to expand.

Rylan brings to the table excellent design skills, a well balanced knowledge of development technique and most importantly a shared desire to provide quality service to clients.

Through the next few months we aim to review our current efforts and work towards optimizing the service and value we provide to our clients.

We’re currently in the process of looking for interns and flex partners for the fall so e-mail kenny@keytheory.com if you have any interest.

QR Codes, Mobile Websites & Social Marketing work great together to effectively promote a message, product or service.

Ok so unless you’ve been living in a bubble, you’ve probably seen these little black and white boxes appearing on a lot of different marketing objects. They are called QR Codes. QR is short for Quick Response. These two dimensional codes are great because they can be scanned with mobile devices and guide users to various elements including:

Websites

Virtual Business Cards

Videos

Google Places Maps

Custom Messages (Text / SMS)

Auto Phone Number

and more…

However if you are using these QR codes you want to be sure that you are using them the most efficient way possible.

Greet users with a mobile website.
If you are guiding users to a website that they can’t easily navigate or find information, then you’re not getting the best results from your efforts. QR codes are scanned by mobile devices, so provide a nice experience when they have scanned the device.

Provide an easy way to connect with your company.
Ok so if you get them to your mobile site, video or message provide a way to connect them to you or your company. Whether it’s a newletter sign up, a social media connection or a contact form make it easy for them to connect with you and perhaps add an incentive for connecting.

Track your results.
If you’re running different ads with QR codes, you can use various QR codes with Google Analytics to track the results from different ads to see which ads or marketing efforts provided better results. By control testing various ads you can figure out with perform better and work towards developing a more effective marketing effort.

Download a QR Code Reader
Download a QR code for your smart phone. They are really easy to use, just turn on the app and focus your your camera lens on the code.

Generate your own QR Codes
This is really easy to do. Select what message, URL or number you are looking to program into the QR code and click Generate. Copy the Generated QR code where you need it.
