Custom Facebook Designs by Kenny Harper of Key Theory

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

I have figured out how to do custom Facebook designs and am adding it to my list of services.

Facebook doesn’t let you “pimp out your page” like good ol’ MySpace use to but you can create custom HTML tabs to your Facebook account. Some other sites such offer ways to re-design your page but it’s really kindahokey. You’ve got to install a software and only other people with the software can see your new profile. It masks the design over the Facebook Page.

Example of custom Facebook Design:

3 main types of search engine searches.

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

There are three main ways people tend to search in search engines are navigational, informational and transactional. It is important to keep this in mind when optimizing for a site. When someone uses a search engine such as Google and type in a keyword, the SERPs (search engine results pages) will show up in the search engine. And what you choose to put in the Titles or descriptions can make a big difference on if people will click on your site depending on their intention. (more…)

So what type of Web Site are dealing with you anyway?

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

The 6 main categories of web sites:

  • Web Based Sales – Selling products on-line / E-commerce
  • Offline Sales – Selling products but on stores or through traditional retail
  • Generating Leads – Getting new business or possible customers
  • Market Awareness – Letting consumers know about a particular product or service
  • Informative or Entertaining – Just for the sake of sharing info or entertainment with others
  • Influential or Persuasion – Trying to influence a person to lean towards a new direction, product or stance

These different types can overlap and be mixed up but realizing what type of site you’re dealing with can make a big difference to how you go about designing the site, marketing it or optimizing it for search engines.

I see KeyTheory.com falls into the Generating Leads, Market Awareness, and Informative categories and will keep that in mind when planning out the rest of the site.

SEO White Hat vs Black Hat Search Engine Optimization

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Using white hat SEO techniques over black hat SEO techniques.

So what is the difference and why should you care?

When I started doing SEO I had a pretty good idea of what I needed to do, however I wasn’t sure what was white hat vs black hat. I think most SEOs (search engine optimizers) may have accidentally used some black hat techniques in the beginning of their career thinking they were doing something helpful to the page. The more you learn there is a right way and a wrong way to do just about anything. (more…)

Why businesses should engage in social media.

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

If you look at FaceBook and Twitter and think, “I don’t get it” or “I don’t have time for that” you’re not alone. Not all that long ago the technology wasn’t even around. I myself actually didn’t get Twitter at first. I thought “I’m not going to waste my time, I’m going to focus on work” well apparently I didn’t get the memo. Social media is a new medium of advertising. It’s great, effective and very helpful to businesses of all sizes. However it does take strategy planning and time to be effective.

Why social media is a must for businesses of all sizes.

Not every business needs a Twitter or Linked In account necessarily. There are definitely different strokes for different folks but unless you are set with the amount of business you currently have and don’t mind losing any I’d advise at least having a digital presence, your competitors probably will.

Social Media allows businesses to:

  • Engage with their customers
  • Research what people are saying about their business
  • Gain insight on where their industry is going
  • Network with others in their industry
  • Gain loyalty with clients

Having the social media outlets is just the beginning.

You can have a YouTube and Twitter account and be using them but if you have no strategy you may not be using them as effectively as you could. Why bother putting more time or money into it? Because you’ll gain more followers and have more loyalty if you give people a reason to return or to share with their contacts. The potential is endless. Some people have shared a link of a video with a few friends and the link goes viral and gets thousands of viewers with in a few hours. Most efforts will not go viral but no effort is a great way to fail.

Here’s a cool slideshow showing you how you can measure your ROI with social media.

Are web designers becoming obsolete due to social media tools?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Why should one continue to hire a professional web designer when building a web site has never been easier? There are sites and services that let people set up web pages with in a few clicks. Web templates are available all over the place and are pretty easy to customize. So it wouldn’t it be a good  idea to save your money and put it into other forms of advertising… Wrong!

The standards for web design continue to raise.

Although you can build a web site really easily in today’s world, it takes a professional to really know how to set your site up for success. Web design is tricky. You could use a paint brush when you were three but it takes experience to master the skill. It’s the same for web. Things such as usability, site hierarchy,  search engine optimization and  social media technologies take time to learn and more time to master. A good experienced web designer should be able to develop a site that will provide better results and a higher ROI than a cheap out of the box web site. If one decides to go the cheapest route they possibly can then they are probably not going to be much of a competition for a competitor who is willing to go the distance to dominate the industry.

Save time by using professional web designers.

Some people may want to avoid the cost of paying someone to do something that they can do themselves. This happens with any industry. Changing the oil on a car is really an easy process but when someone could get it done quicker and save you the hassle so you can focus on what you want to do, that’s probably better for both of you. Same thing with web design. You can pay professional, get the job done quicker, get better results and have more time to do the things you can do for your business.

Technology are continues to grow.

As new technologies come out, businesses will continue to jump on them and utilize their services to gain advantage over their competition. The businesses that fail to grow or change will be holding themselves back if not eliminating themselves completely. Can you imagine a business today that refused to ever use a phone or e-mail as they preferred to handle business in person… Very unlikely.

Good Professional Web Designers offer:

  • A professional product
  • One of the best ROIs in advertising
  • Valuable experience
  • Quicker Turnaround
  • A broad understanding of the web

Finding your digital footprint on the web

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Until recently with the explosion of social media I haven’t been marketing myself that much on the web. I’ve had a site and pointed people to it. It worked for several years but times have changed and so has the way to market one self.

Below I’m linking some sites that I currently use frequently and some site stats. (more…)
