Some Challenges of Designing a Website

I have been designing, building, and developing websites for several years as a freelancer. I have run into a number of challenging situations as a website designer, and hope that sharing some of what I have learned will help you with your website.
Here are several pitfalls in the website design process, and ways to get around them:
-
Not doing your homework or having a strategy
This is a sure fire way to fail; if you don’t know what goals you’re trying to achieve, then you are most likely not going to reach them. You need to decide – what are the goals for your website, and then develop your site around those goals.
-
Taking the cheap route
Some people try to save money or time by going with a “plug and play” template, or having their friend’s son build them a website. If you really want to get a ROI (Return On Investment), you need to be willing to make an investment. Would you want someone to put a roof on your house for $100? Probably not; that’d be scary! The same is true for your website; just because you might not see much difference in appearance if you get a $100 website design, your visitors will, and the $100 website won’t get a good search engine ranking for your business. No need to spend top dollar, but you do need to find a web designer with reasonable rates who is willing to make an investment into your company if you expect others to.
-
There is no absolute perfect
Too many people fall for this one; trying to get everything completely perfect before moving to the next stage. Don’t get me wrong you should have the major wrinkles ironed out, but no need to be perfect – your site can be changed and improved after it goes live. It is not set in stone; you can launch your new website and continue to refine and add to it as time goes on.
